JOE EDEN, Hollywood's top macho star, is upset with persistent rumors that the he-man is actually a chicken. Together with his manager and closest confidante MELANIE GLICK, he stages a Publicity stunt in which he announces he will personally perform all the action sequences in his upcoming film.

Tormented by gun toting fans and an abusive reporter, JOE decides to take a vacation at his Island retreat, traveling in disguise. A mysterious woman, TAMARA MCSHANE, sits next to him on the plane, seeking a confrontation over a script she submitted for him which was returned unread. JOE is unwilling to deal with the pest, but before he can shake her, the plane makes an emergency landing in Jamaica. As they deplane, JOE and TAMARA are shot at by gun wielding thugs. As they hide in the ladies room, TAMARA explains she is a reporter investigating a story on a CIA plot against businessman JUDSON PARVIS. Now that she has been seen with JOE, the CIA henchmen will assume he's in on it, so he's involved in her predicament, willing or not. Sparks fly, but they are determined to make it back to Washington to get to the bottom of it.

They buy a ride to Miami, on a gun runner's boat, but the boat is attacked by pirates and they are stranded in the shark infested waters. Meanwhile, MELANIE is concerned over JOE's disappearance, and following her only lead, meets with PARVIS hoping he might hear from the reporter. JOE and TAMARA are rescued by SALVATION SAM, an elderly island minister, who arranges unorthodox transportation to the States on a biplane piloted by a hippie friend. When the friend makes a pit stop in the Everglades to complete a drug deal, they are nearly killed by DEA agents, but TAMARA manages to fly the plane to safety. Holed up at a small hotel, JOE calls MELANIE, who informs them TAMARA'S partner has been killed, but that PARVIS has been very helpful. JOE and TAMARA fight, but they're stuck together, posing as honeymooners, and wind up actually making love.

PARVIS arranges to meet them at the Lincoln Memorial, but they go in disguise. Discovering they've been set up, they narrowly escape. With nowhere else to go, JOE takes TAMARA to the rough neighborhood where he grew up. His neglected mother greets them warmly along with his old motorcycle gang buddies. JOE and TAMARA realize PARVIS is behind the whole thing, but they fight and JOE disappears. TAMARA decides to confront PARVIS herself, with the motorcycle gang as backup. They crash a party at PARVIS' estate, but are discovered and taken to a back room. His thugs are about to kill them, when JOE shows up. Before JOE can get his hands on him, PARVIS escapes, taking TAMARA hostage. A madcap chase ensues, winding up right in front of the restaurant where MELANIE is dining with JOE's producer. JOE rescues TAMARA before stunned onlookers who are convinced it's all a show, but JOE proves he's a true hero, as the story ends.
